Mera Peak is a less trodden climbing route as the path is a bit difficult in comparison to other climbing routes. With the altitude of 6461 meters and 21190 feet, the climbing to Mera Peak is rated as PD (Peu Difficile) meaning a little technically difficult trail and walk on the glaciers. This grading is done according to the Swiss/French Alpine system. It is perfectly isolated and rich in the enthralling wilderness in the remote Hinku valley i.e. in the southeastern part of Khumbu region.
Starting the climbing from the Mera Peak High Camp at the height of 5780 meters, you have to aim for the summit after proper acclimatization and complete relaxing rest. You will take the longer route passing via the Zatra La Pass heading south from Lukla towards the lovely Hinku valley. Mera Peak Trek and Climb are usually recommended during the Spring season (March to May) and Autumn season (September to November) due to the clear visibility of the mountains and minimal alterations in the weather conditions. The accommodation during the climb is usually in the teahouses with basic facilities and mostly in Tents. Passing via quaint villages enriched in the local Tibetan cultures and friendly Sherpa people will make you feel relaxed and comfortable during the climb. There are varied food items like Nepalese traditional food, Tibetan, Continental, Indian; Italian, etc. are available on the menu. The representative from Step On Himalaya will meet you at the arrival of Tribhuwan International Airport. After claiming your luggage, you will be transferred to the hotel in a private vehicle and then after finishing the check-in process, the representative will take your leave. If you will arrive at day time, you can visit the office of Step On Himalaya where you will be provided with some information regarding the trip. If you will arrive at night, it will be carried out the next day.
Today you will be taken around the valley by the Tour Guide of Step On Himalaya. He will meet you at the lobby of the hotel at around 9 am and then take you to the cultural and historical heritage of the Kathmandu valley. The main places are Kathmandu Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple. After finishing the sightseeing tour, you can prepare for the trip the next day.
An early morning mountain flight to Lukla. The representative will take you to Tribhuwan Domestic Airport in a private vehicle. The scenic mountain flight to Lukla is scary but rewarding as you will be able to see the glittering and eye-soothing snow-capped mountains. Lukla airport is considered to be one of the dangerous airports. After arriving at Lukla, the Climbing Guide from Step On Himalaya will welcome you and then after taking some rest, you’ll start trekking towards Chhuthang. Please be with the group as there are numerous trails leading towards different destinations.
You will start your walk from Chhuthang after having breakfast. There is a steep ascent heading towards the crossing of Zatra La Passat the height of 4600 meters. After walking for about 5 to 6 hours, you will reach Thuli Kharka.
Today is the combo of uphill and downhill trails passing through the dense jungles of Rhododendron, Pine, Juniper, and Oak. The astounding views of Mera peak and the adjoining snow-covered peaks are mind-blowing. There is a steep downhill to the Hinku river and then a final ascent leading to Kote which is a small village lying to the western side of the Hinku valley. The climbers are amused with the amazing wilderness of Kote with the lush vegetation.
The trek will start from Kotor towards the Thangnak following the trail of the Hinku River. As you walk on, there is a Lungsumgba Gompa which was established about 200 years back. You can find the Mera peak along with its climbing route scripted in a rock. This is a superb piece of architecture of rock carving, Then continuing the walk, you will be arriving at the summer grazing settlement of Thangnak. There are many shops and lodges/tea houses here.
The climbing trail today will lead towards the Khare village. Walking over the lateral meadows towards the Shar Glaciers and Hinku Nup, a steep ascent to Khare offers the amazing view of the Northern part of Mera Peak. You will stay here for exploring the Khare and mainly for acclimatization.
You are in the mountains of alpine vegetation where alterations in weather are unpredictable. So you must adapt yourself according to the surrounding and the vegetation. So acclimatization is very important to decide on your further climbing trip. You will give proper rest to your body and mind today. Khare is situated at an altitude of above 5000 meters. So, the Climbing Guide (a representative from Step On Himalaya) will make all the necessary arrangements and will recheck your trekking Gears and equipment for the further climb.
Today’s trek is mostly steep ascent towards the Mera Peak Base Camp. There is a slow ascent over towards the Mera Glacier. Continuing the climb, you will arrive at the Mera Peak Base Camp traversing the glacier. After reaching there, the Climbing Guide will set up the camp and make the other required arrangements for the overnight stay.
Leaving the Mera Peak Base Camp, you will follow the climbing trail leading towards the Mera La Pass. It is a rocky and snow-covered trail towards the Mera Peak High Camp. You will start enjoying the mesmerizing views of Everest, Nuptse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Chamlang and Baruntse. Once you reach the Mera Peak High Camp, again the Climbing Guide will set up the tents and make the necessary arrangements for spending the night.
After re-checking all the trekking gears and equipment and being fully prepared with full acclimatized, you will start walking aiming to reach the summit of Mera Peak before the midday. You will start walking at about 2 in the morning after taking your breakfast and start climbing up the glacier on to the ridge. Strong winds usually give problems afternoon. So, you must continue your regular pace towards the Mera Peak Summit. After reaching the top, the view of the gigantic peaks of altitude higher than 8000 meters – Everest (8848m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), Makalu (8463m), Cho Oyu (8201m), Nuptse (7855m) and Chamlang (7319m) is simply awesome. After spending some quality time at the summit and capturing the memories, you will follow the same route to return to Khare for spending the night.
This day is usually kept as a Reserve day just in case of any contingency. You are in the mountains and you never know about the unfavorable weather changes. So after achieving the Mera Peak Summit, you will be staying and resting on this reserve day to avoid any unwanted forthcoming events. If everything goes smoothly without any problem, you can use this reserve day to return.
You will be following the previous trail to walk back to Kote. In the earlier part of the climb, you were climbing up mostly. Now, you will be climbing down towards Kote passing through Thangnak. You will start leaving the high altitudes and entering the dense forests of Rhododendron, Pines, Oaks, Birch and Juniper. You will then arrive at Kote after crossing the forests.
From Kote towards the Thuli Kharka, you will have an uphill walk passing through the dense forests reaching over the western part of the Hinku valley. This walk is heading towards the Thuli Kharka. After reaching there, the amazing views of Mera Northern, Mera Central and Mera Southern faces please your hectic walks.
The trekking ends today at Lukla. You will start walking from Thuli Kharka gradually ascending till the crossing of the Zatra La Pass and then from there you will descend till you reach Lukla. Celebration in the evening for the successful triumph of Mera Peak Summit.
As a regular early morning flight back to Kathmandu after breakfast and then the representative from Step On Himalaya will receive you at the airport and take you to the hotel. Your choice – either you want to rest or just roam around the local places.
This is a leisure day in Kathmandu. You can either spend time walking around the bustling Thamel or visit the nearby places or also you can plan for a short day hike to nearby hills. You can do shopping and buy some souvenirs. Rest and packing for the final departure.
The representative of Step On Himalaya will escort you to the International Airport for your final departure. You have to reach the airport at least 3 hours prior to the flight schedule.
